2015 Scholarship Recipients

TIANNA WALLICK
Norma Jean Ware Duncan Scholar
Tianna is a graduate of Quaker Valley High School and lives in the Sewickley area. She is a member of the National Honor Society with Distinguished Honors. Tianna has been the QV Varsity Cheerleading Squad captain during her senior year, a member of the Key Club, leader of the Sunshine Committee, and an Art Club advisor. Because of her amazing ability to perform exceptional analytical thought processing and abstract reasoning as well as communicating her ideas, she became a teaching assistant in Honors Chemistry at Quaker Valley HS. Tianna serves her community by participating in various service projects and volunteering with the Quaker Valley Midget Cheer Program teaching a sport, but she also teaches life skills to young girls. She continues to share her past Girl Scout spirit of “being a sister to every Girl Scout and respect myself and respect authority.” Tianna will attend the University of Florida as a Pre-Dental student in the fall. |
MARINA HAWKIN
NHEW, Inc. Scholar
Marina is a graduate of Pittsburgh Perry High School and a resident of the Northside of the city of Pittsburgh. Marina was president of her senior class, a member of the National Honor Society and has received Perfect Attendance awards. She has acted in all musical productions for all of her four years at Perry HS and is proudly a member of C.H.A.N.G.E.S. which is a program of pairing up of students from other schools for volunteer opportunities. In addition, Marina participated in several sports including softball, rowing and basketball. Marina serves her community by volunteering at Allegheny General Hospital and has worked diligently on a fundraising project for the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Fund, not as a school project, but because she sees a need and wants to pursue that need. In the Fall, Marina will attend Carlow University to obtain her nursing degree. |
LAUREN WILLIAMS-WILLIS
Norma Jean Ware Duncan Scholar
Lauren is a graduate of North Hills High School and lives in the Ross Township area. Lauren is a member of the National Honor Society and has traveled to Europe with the French Club and was Vice President of Future Business Leaders of America.
Lauren was voted by the senior class “The Most Athletic Student for 2015.” She was the North Hills track team captain for three years and currently holds three school track records. She also is a member of the Midas Track Club and has participated in National Junior Olympics. Lauren is a member of the Allegheny Center Alliance Church and serves as a Sunday school teacher and assists teachers in the ACAC Kids Club. Lauren has traveled throughout the United States and Canada doing various missionary work as well as participating in local service projects. After being accepted by four different colleges, Lauren has made the decision to attend Washington & Jefferson College in the Fall. Her major will be Pre-Dental. |
JOSHUA WHITTED
NHEW, Inc. Scholar
Joshua is a graduate of Agora Cyber Charter School and a resident of the Northside of the city of Pittsburgh. He is a member and Service Coordinator for the National Honor Society and also a member of National Society of High School Scholars. Joshua has a strong desire to be successful in his academic career
beyond high school. He has served his community by being a summer camp counselor for several years and participating in mission trips to help renovate a school, volunteering at a Jamaican orphanage, and volunteering at a faith based pregnancy center in Harrisburg. Joshua is an active member of Christ Church at Grove Farm as a leader in the Youth Ministry program which sometimes gives him the opportunity to teach for the pastor. Joshua plans to attend Washington & Jefferson College in the Fall. His goal is to eventually obtain his Master of Divinity degree and accept his “Call”. |
2014 Scholarship Recipients
PITTSBURGH, PA, June 22, 2014- North Hills Ebony Women, Inc. (NHEW) held their annual scholarship reception at LaRoche College - Art Gallery on Sunday, June 22, 2014. Kara Rollock and Brandi McKnight received the 2014 scholarships in honor of their outstanding academic performance and dedication to community involvement.
The NHEW Scholarship Reception integrated an outstanding speech from the keynote speaker, Ayisha A. Morgan-Lee, Founder, CEO, and Artistic Director of Hill Dance Academy Theatre (HDAT) and a beautiful performance by her young dancers. The two scholarship recipients were presented with a $750 scholarship and a NHEW scholar plaque to commemorate this special occasion. In addition, NHEW was blessed to have a past scholar, Erin Perry provide the recipients with encouraging words. |
KARA ROLLOCK
Norma Jean Ware Duncan Scholar
Kara Rollock, Norman Jean Ware Duncan Scholar, is a graduate of Quaker Valley High School and a resident of Sewickley. Kara is a member of the National Honors Society, a three-year Distinguished Honor student, and a Westinghouse Science Awardee. She was the captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, President of Quaker Valley Voice, and a member of the Principal Advisory Committee, French Club, and Rachel Scott Club. Kara services the community through her volunteering efforts at the local food bank, Ronald McDonald House, Jubilee Soup Kitchen, and Healthsouth. In the fall, Kara will be attending Elon University, majoring in Physical Therapy. Kara is the daughter of Sydney and Sharon Rollock.. |

BRANDI MCKNIGHT
NHEW, Inc. Scholar
Brandi McKnight is a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and a resident of Wilkinsburg. Brandi is a member of National Honors Society, Wilkinsburg High School Gifted Program, F.U.S.E., and Pittsburgh Girl’s Study. She is an awardee of the Shining Stars Award. In addition, Brandi has been nominated for the Global Travel Scholars Program and National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientist Award. Brandi continues to service her school and community through the Meals on Wheels program and volunteering in the high school library. In the fall, Brandi will be attending University of Toledo, majoring in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Brandi is the daughter of Tia Holtz. |

DEJA HOPKINS
NHEW, Inc. Scholar
Deja Hopkins is a graduate of Pittsburgh Barack Obama Academy of International Studies and a resident of the City of Pittsburgh. As a high school senior, Deja was a member of the National Honors Society, C.H.A.N.GE.S., and the Soccer Team. She is a recipient of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh- National Achievers Society, Renaissance Award, and Shyne Award. Deja volunteers with the Council of Three Rivers, Shyne Awards, and WAMO. In the fall, Deja will be attending the Robert Morris University, majoring in Finance. Deja is the daughter of Danielle Hopkins.

KELSEY MILLER
NHEW, Inc. Scholar
Kelsey Miller is a graduate of Pittsburgh CAPA High School and a resident of the City of Pittsburgh. As a high school senior, Kelsey was a member of the African American Centers for Advanced Studies Council, Yearbook, Newspaper, and CAPAcion. She is a three time recipient of the Scholastic Gold Key Award, and an awardee of the Panera Bread Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest and the 2013 Youth Spotlight Award. Kelsey continues her service in the community at the Summer VolunTEEN, Community Dance Workshops, and Operation Inasmuch Food Bank. In the fall, Kelsey will be attending Howard University, majoring in Communications. Kelsey is the daughter of Ty and Arleen Miller. |

2012 Scholarship Recipients
PITTSBURGH, PA, June 24, 2012- North Hills Ebony Women, Inc. (NHEW) held their annual scholarship reception at LaRoche College - Art Gallery on Sunday, June 24, 2012. Eve Bowers and Jacqueline Clarke received the 2012 scholarships in honor of their outstanding academic performance and dedication to community involvement.
The North Hills Ebony Women Scholarship was first awarded in the spring of 1986 for minority students in the Pittsburgh Public School System and the North Hills School System. In 1997, North Hills Ebony Women established the Norma Jean Ware Duncan Memorial Scholarship which was specifically designated for students in the North Hills. Norma Jean Ware Duncan was one of the original members of North Hills Ebony Women, Inc., and served as a mentor to young girls at Allegheny Middle School.
The scholarship reception included an outstanding speech from the keynote speaker, Kimberly Gill, TV Anchor from KDKA. Kimberly spoke to the audience about the importance of education and her lifelong journey to her profession. The two scholarship recipients were presented with a check for $750 and a NHEW scholar’s plaque to commemorate this special occasion. In addition to the attendance of the NHEW membership, the scholars were supported by family members, mentors, and their church family. Over the years, North Hills Ebony Women, Inc. has celebrated and recognized the achievements of over 50 outstanding students from the North Hills and the Pittsburgh Public School District. |
EVE BOWERS
Norma Jean Ware Duncan Scholar
Eve Bowers is a graduate of Quaker Valley High School and a resident of Sewickley. As a high school senior, Eve was a member of the National Honors Society, Varsity Soccer Team, and Spanish Club. She is an AP Scholar, awardee of the Outstanding Participant of the National Achievement Scholarship Program, and Willard J. Tillotson Essay Contest winner. Eve continues her service in the community as active member of the Girls Scouts for the past 12 years and a member of the North Hills Anti-Racism Coalition. In the fall, Eve will be attending the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Pre-Med. Eve is the daughter of Miriam Rader and Richard Bowers. |
JACQUELINE CLARKE

Jacqueline Clarke is a graduate of the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies and a resident of the City of Pittsburgh. As a high school senior, Jacqueline was a member of the National Honor Society, Future Educators of America, Senior cabinet, and Varsity Cheerleading Squad. She is the 2010 Miss Ebony Teenager and an active member of Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church. In the fall, Jacqueline will be attending Howard University, double majoring in History and English with a minor in Secondary Education. Jacqueline is the daughter of Myrna Clarke. |

2011 Scholarship Recipients
PITTSBURGH, June 26, 2011- North Hills Ebony Women, Inc. held their annual scholarship reception in the Art Gallery at LaRoche College on Sunday, June 26, 2011. Two high school graduates exhibiting excellence in academics and community involvement received the 2011 Scholarships. Valerie McDonald Roberts, Manager of Allegheny County Department of Real Estate provided the keynote address while Fawn Robinson, the Scholarship Committee chairperson presented the scholars with a check for $750 and a scholar’s medal. In addition to the attendance of the NHEW membership, the scholars were supported by family members, mentors, and teachers. |

Rebecca Reid is a graduate of North Hills Senior High School and a resident of Ross Township. As a high school senior, Rebecca was the President of Hands For Service, Secretary of the National Honors Society, Leader of the Diversity Council and C.H.A.N.G.E.S and a member of the Leadership Council and Spanish Club. In the fall, Rebecca will be attending the University of Pittsburgh, majoring Neuroscience and Psychology. Rebecca is the daughter of Lori Dean. |

Jasmine Leming is a graduate of the Pittsburgh Perry High School and a resident of the City of Pittsburgh. Dina Clark, YWCA Director of Race and Gender Equity provided the keynote address while NHEW President Joy Maxberry Woodruff added remarks. The scholarship committee co-chairs Fawn Robinson and Sharon Rollock presented the students with checks for $750 each. |

DaMarra Underwood- Awarded the North Hills Ebony Women, Inc. Scholarship, is a graduate of the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School and a resident of Pittsburgh, PA. DaMarra is a member of the National Honors Society, National Music Honor Society, and Metropolitan Baptist Church Youth Group. DaMarra will be attending Howard University in the fall and she is the daughter of Howard and Gloria Underwood.
Taylor Doaty- Awarded the Norma Ware Duncan Memorial Scholarship, is a graduate of Oakland Catholic High School and a resident of Wexford, PA. Taylor is a member of the National Honors Society, Mukwano Club, Film Club, Varsity Track Team, and Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. Taylor will be attending Georgetown University in the fall and she is the daughter of Thomas and Nile Doaty. |
